Alamo honors America with weekend full of events

Alamo children cooled off the old fashioned way during the Fourth of July weekend — with a water hose.

In celebration of our nation, this year’s festivities in Alamo took place from Saturday, July 1 through July 4.

Many activities helped raise money for students and organizations in Pahranagat Valley. The Firecracker 5K Color Run started everything off at 6:30 a.m. on July 1 to help support the Pahranagat Valley High School Cheerleaders. They were able to raise $400 and had twenty-five participants. The Whipple Whirlwinds won the Volleyball Tournament after going the maximum amount of games against a great competitor. The team with Ken Turley, Ryan Collins, Matt McArthur and Michael Strong won the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Finishing off Saturday was the Motorcycle and Quad Barrel Races which had a great turnout at the rodeo grounds.

Sunday night featured a musical tribute to America in the High School multipurpose room. While music was played and writings recited, a slideshow in the background showed all of the members of the valley who have served our country and have helped preserve our freedom.

The night of July 3 was another successful Mutton Bustin’ at the rodeo grounds. Many people gathered to watch children ages 4-10 ride sheep named Thunder, Chaos, etc. for as long as they could muster. Concessions for the event helped raise money for the Splash Pad through the Friends of Pahranagat Valley.

The Fourth of July started with a small gathering of residents for the replacing and raising of the American and state flag in front of the high school. A pancake breakfast helped raise $425 for the Pahranagat Valley FFA. Then residents gathered to enjoy the parade around town.

In the city park, there were many booths full of great food, games and things to buy from people in the Valley. Competitions of watermelon seed spitting, kid races, sack races, three legged races and the money spray served as entertainment. People were then able to cool down…
