Harland Williams returns to Irvine with a new look – Orange County Register

Bored of the “same old T-shirt and jeans look” standup comedians tend to sport in their comedy specials, quirky comedian Harland Williams said he searched for inspiration to change the look of standup.

Then, he found it: an animated mask of a pug dog. Known for performing various characters and animal impressions in his comedy, Williams named this newest character “Caramel Corn the Pug,” which he will introduce to the world at a special live taping for two showings at the Irvine Improv on Thursday, May 22.

“I came across this make and thought, oh yeah, I have to do my next special as a dog. This is silly, this is funny. That’s the way I think comedy should be, taking chances. I’m doing it,” said Williams, who will not be removing the mask throughout the entire show.

Popular for his wacky roles in movies such as the cop in “Dumb and Dumber,” the hitchhiker in “There’s Something About Mary” and the eccentric astronaut in “RocketMan,” Williams said he is always looking to do something unique for his standup comedy specials – his last special “Force of Nature” was shot in the middle of the desert on a giant hill, with no audience, for instance.

His character Caramel Corn has a back-story, but Williams said it is still in development. The pug is a struggling comedian trying to make it big in the industry – a difficult feat for any comedian, but especially for a dog.

“The truth is, I’m going to be doing my same material that I do as Harland, but as a pug. It will be the same routine that I’ve been working on, but I will sprinkle some dog humor in,” said Williams with a laugh, “Just in case some dogs are watching, I don’t want them to feel left out.”

The Canadian-born comedian currently has several projects on the table, including creating, producing and providing voice work for the new Disney Junior animated series “Puppy Dog Pals,” which premiered in April. He is also working on launching a tour to present his…
