Newport Beach boater, 70, killed in propeller accident – Orange County Register

NEWPORT BEACH  A 70-year-old man died Sunday, Aug. 13, after he was severely cut by the propeller of his boat, officials said.

The incident was reported to the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol at 2:52 p.m. as passengers aboard the large double-decker boat tried to save its captain, said Lt. Steve Gil.

The accident happened after the man climbed off his boat for a swim close to the open waters near the jetty, Gil said.

To help him get back to the boat more quickly, someone on the boat backed it toward him. At one point, the man was lacerated by the boat’s propeller, Gil said.

The man was pulled aboard the boat and people on the boat tried to do CPR, Gil said. The man was pronounced dead at the Coast Guard dock by paramedics from the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Gil said it did not appear that alcohol was a factor.
