Reader poll: Of all the one-hit wonders, which one is No. 1? Second-round results | GO – Arts & entertainment

Only the best get to advance.

You voted on our roundup of 64 iconic one-hit wonders from the past four decades, and the results are in for the first round.

The closest margin was Debby Boone’s “You Light Up My Life” versus The Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight.” In the end, “You Light Up My Life” won by a mere 11 votes.

The biggest victory came from “Come On Eileen,” which beat Gregory Abbott’s “Shake You Down” by more than 400 votes.

Interestingly, there were no upsets in the ’90s bracket. The biggest upset came in the ’70s: No. 13 “The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia” defeated No. 4 “Lovin’ You” quite handily.

And now we’re down to 32 songs.

My favorite matchups in round two are iconic ’80s one-hit-wonders “867-5309” and “I’ve Had the Time of My Life,” the funk vs. country matchup in “Play That Funky Music” and “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” and the ’90s battle-of-the-titans in “Macarena” and “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles).”

Oh, and Biz Markie, who performs in Lincoln on Thursday, is still in the running.

Eight one-hit wonders remain from each of four consecutive decades, starting with the 1970s. Vote for your favorites below and check back on Omaha.com to vote in the following rounds, with voting ending at noon on the final day of each round. The champion will be revealed on Friday, Aug. 18.
