School’s back in session

Santa Fe Public Schools starts its autumn semester for students in grades 1-12 on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Students enrolled in the district’s pre-K program also start on Wednesday, Aug. 16. Kindergarten students start school two days later, on Friday, Aug. 18. Visit and click on the “calendar” link for more information.

Some private schools, including St. Michael’s High School, also start school on Aug. 16. Others begin later in August or in early September. Local colleges also have different start dates for the autumn semester. For example, Santa Fe Community College starts classes for students on Monday, Aug. 21. Check individual school websites for calendar schedules.

School supply drive today

The Santa Fe Community Guidance Center is seeking school supply donations to help needy families who may not be able to afford those supplies. Pencils, red and blue pens, scissors, dry-erase markers and other items are needed. Donations can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, at the center, located at 2960 Rodeo Park Drive West in Santa Fe. The center is holding an Open House and Health Fair from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday as well. For more information, call 505-946-1506.

School board meeting Tuesday

Santa Fe Public Schools’ board of education meets at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the district’s Educational Services Center at 610 Alta Vista St. The public is invited and the agenda includes a period for public commentary. Among the agenda items are the introduction of new student board members, an update on the district’s truancy prevention program and an update on teacher vacancies as school prepares to open again on Wednesday, Aug. 16.
