A doomsday prepper shot dead by his girlfriend may have asked her to kill him so he could escape an ‘online cult’.
Stephen Mineo, 32, was killed inside his home in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police were called to the home by 42-year-old Barbara Rogers, who confessed she shot her survivalist boyfriend once in the forehead at close range, the Morning Call newspaper reports.
Pocono Mountain police searched the apartment and found a 45-caliber handgun. Rogers has since been charged with criminal homicide, and is being held without bail.
However, stunning allegations regarding the shooting emerged over the weekend, with friends and neighbors of the 32-year-old suggesting he was being harassed by a highly-religious online cult and was so desperate to escape them he could have asked Rogers to shoot him.
‘(Rogers) identified that the deceased was having online issues with a cult and he wanted to be killed and requested she do it,’ police lieutenant Steven Williams told WBRE.
‘They dropped him because they were too far out, they weren’t religious, they were just a cult thing, so he got rid of that,’ Kevin Wade told WNEP about how Mineo and Rogers tried to break away from the online group.
