The Emmerdale star likes to look dapper off the set

Matthew, 37, has played David Metcalfe in Emmerdale since 2006 and before that was seen onstage in Saturday Night Fever. A member of the British gymnastics squad until the age of 16, he won the seventh series of Dancing On Ice in 2012. Matthew lives in Manchester with fiancée Charley Webb, who plays Emmerdale’s Debbie Dingle. They have two sons, Buster and Bowie.

How would you describe your style?

High street. Fairly smart and a bit rugged. I’m not the kind of person to walk around in a £1,000 T-shirt because I’d likely spill coffee on it. I’m more of a follower than a trendsetter.

Which colours suit you best? Dark or muted block colours, but nothing fussy. I’m not into wearing logos or patterns. I’ve bought a couple of check shirts but never worn them. I like to keep it plain.

What are your favourite labels and shops? River Island, Zara and Hennes. Charley and I shop more for the kids than ourselves and when we are buying for them we sometimes buy for us, too. Buster has a better wardrobe than me.

Who is your favourite designer? Vivienne Westwood. When I was younger, before I had the kids, I’d buy her shirts, but it would have to be a very posh occasion for me to shop in there now. I also like Ted Baker and AllSaints, but I don’t splash out often.
